Really don’t see the point to Diaspora, it seems like the typical angry hippy response to any successful proprietary thing is to clone it without actually doing anything new or better.
You’re probably right. However, I’m sufficiently dissatisfied with virtually every social networking platform I’ve ever used that I’m willing to try something different.
Successful != good.
The problem is you’ll be in the very small minority who are dissatisfied enough to switch and a social network lives and dies by the size of its user base.

In any case: I’m not interested in the platform as a social networking service. Screw that. I already loathe the ones I’ve already used: why would I want to loathe another? I’m just offering the opportunity to use it to people who might like to!
Really no need for the sarcasm, it’s still no benefit to an unpopular network if a few people use it in addition to everything else.

Yeah; okay, point taken. But on the other hand, it seems short-sighted to assume that because a company has already taken a dominant position that nothing else will ever challenge that. Remember IBM?
Hah; good old ACS. Actually, I had an idea for a mechanism for a *truly* distributed (almost P2P) social networking system a few years ago that I never got around to mocking up a prototype for. It would never have caught on, either, because it required too much technical knowledge. But it used some fabulous encryption to ensure that your data was safe, which was nice. Anyway; another day, another dream.
Yeah why not. I’ve not had a look at it yet.
